Virtual Diagnostics

Current standard-of-care diagnostic techniques rely primarily on static imaging (X-Ray, CT, MRI) of a patient while they are lying in a recumbent position. However, these standard static imaging tests are unable to identify the cause of pain in over 85% of low back pain patients.  These statistics are not surprising given that spine tissues behave differently when they are supporting loads due to gravity and dynamic motion.

Our personalized biomechanical models integrate the information collected from our Spine Health Assessment with CT and MR imaging data to quantify dynamic forces on a person's spine.  We believe models like these may soon be able to help physicians identify the root cause of a patient's symptoms and map out a more targeted course of treatment.

Data from traditional imaging:
  • Morphology (shape of spinal structures) during static, unloaded conditions
Data from our personalized models:
  • Morphology (shape of spinal structures) during realistic, loaded conditions
  • Kinematics (how you move)
  • Kinetic forces (gravity, momentum)
  • Muscle recruitment and force
  • Ligament and bone-on-bone contact forces
  • Disc deformation and bulging
