Ergonomic Needs and Barriers for Exoskeleton Implementation in the Operating Room

This webinar will be presented by Dr. Dimitrios Stefanidis (Professor of Surgery, Indiana University School of Medicine) and Dr. Denny Yu (Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering, Purdue University).

Webinar Summary:  Musculoskeletal symptoms and injuries have adverse impacts on worker health and performance in surgical environments.  Though the ergonomic risks in surgery are well-recognized, mitigation of these risk factors are especially difficult in surgery due to the demanding work and restrictive work environment (e.g., sterility) that must prioritize patient safety. This webinar will discuss: (1) ergonomics in the operating room; and (2) facilitators and barriers to exoskeleton technology for surgical team members.

Speaker Information

Dimitrios Stefanidis, MD, PhD, FACS, FASMBS is a professor of surgery, the Vice Chair of education, and Chief of minimally invasive and bariatric surgery in the department of surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine.  He has a strong interest in improving surgical training and optimizing surgical performance, publishing over 180 peer-reviewed papers and several book chapters.

Denny Yu, PhD, CPE, is currently an Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University, Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE), and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine.  His current research links the areas of ergonomics, exposure assessment, work and intervention design, and systems engineering with applications in improving the safety in healthcare work environments for both patients and medical professionals.
